DINNER & OVERNIGHT: Herods Tel Aviv

        Tues, Feb. 5

        JAFFA & TEL AVIV

Enjoy a late start to the morning, and then we drive through the main streets of vivacious Tel Aviv to the old port city of Jaffa, from where Jonah set sail and where Peter had his vision at the home of Simon the Tanner. Start your exploration of Israel with a walking tour of this ancient seaport; stroll along the charming cobblestone streets, now filled with boutiques and galleries. Visit St. Peter’s Church and celebrate Mass.

Drive through Tel Aviv, which has been proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage site for its splendid Bauhaus Architecture and has the largest number of buildings in this unique style of any city in the world! Continue to the Carmel Market and the arts and crafts fare on Nachalat Binyamin Street and enjoy the delightful craft stalls – a shopper’s paradise. Enjoy free time to explore on your own, try a falafel lunch or other Israeli specialty, and then return to the hotel.

Early this evening gather together as a guest speaker provides an Israel Update and gives a perspective of current events. Afterward, enjoy an included ‘dine-around’ dinner – which offers the opportunity to dine like a local, in smaller groups, by selecting from one of three restaurants that have been reserved so you can experience the cuisine and atmosphere of Tel Aviv.(B & D)

        OVERNIGHT: Herods Tel Aviv

        Wed, Feb. 6

Visit the Basilica of the Annunciation and celebrate Mass. Lunch on your own. Depart Nazareth for the nearby small village of Cana, where Jesus performed his first miracle of turning water into wine; visit the Franciscan Wedding Church with an opportunity for married couples to renew their wedding vows.

Continue to Mt. Bental in the Golan Heights, overlooking site of decisive tank battle during 1973 Yom Kippur War; learn about the 20th century battles that protected Israel’s
future. Mount Bental is a crater of a dormant volcano, and now a decommissioned army bunker, offering great panoramic views of the Golan and the Syrian city of Kuneitra.

As we return to the Galilee region, we stop for a St Peter’s fish lunch at a restaurant on shore of Sea of Galilee. We drive a short distance to board our boat and to experience the Sea of Galilee as we image the disciples did. In our wooden boat, resembling the ancient boats of the time of Jesus, the wind and waves remind us of the gospel stories, and we are surrounded by landscapes sacred for thousands of years.

We will continue to Tabgha, to visit the Church of the Multiplication of Loaves and Fishes, the site of the miracle described in all four gospels. The church is famous for its incredible 4th century mosaic floor. Celebrate Mass and continue to the Church of the Primacy of Peter, on the shores of the Galilee.

Visit Magdala Project, site of excavations of 1st Century Jewish fishing village where a synagogue from the time of Jesus has been discovered. Since Jesus taught throughout the Galilee regions, it is believed that he taught at this spot, in the hometown of Mary Magdalene.
